"I'm delighted that the work I had an honour to contribute to - as one of over 20 jurors - will inform the Irish government's position and initiatives at policy and implementation levels.
The jury report identifies 25 recommendations for health policy-makers focusing on the safe, ethical and inclusive use of AI in Ireland’s healthcare system. Among the recommendations were calls to:
- Establish a statutory body to regulate AI in healthcare by 2025
- Appoint an independent Commissioner to advise in the public interest
- Ensure AI-enabled care supports, not replaces, healthcare professionals
- Use AI-enabled care to enhance, not undermine, the doctor-patient relationship
- Publish a national strategy for the use of AI in healthcare by 2026
- Develop a national education campaign to raise awareness
- Pass national legislation to protect individual rights and health data
- Ensure AI-enabled care is available to all
Involve the public in the implementation of AI pilot solutions
- Ensure an informed consent process underpins AI-enabled care.
I hope the education sector follows this important trend as well as future skill demand and develops programmes that will help medical professionals develop new technologies and medical students - use them efficiently and responsibly."
