HSE Medical Intern Applications for July 2027 Are Now Open: What Graduates of Polish Medical Universities Need to Know When Studying Medicine in Poland
For every Irish student who chooses to study medicine in Poland, there is one milestone that matters more than almost any other: securing a place on the intern year in Ireland. That moment has arrived again. The HSE National Recruitment Service has opened applications for medical intern training in Ireland commencing July 2027 (campaign reference NRS15566), and the window is short.
Applications opened on Friday, 16 October 2026 and close at 12 noon (Irish time) on Monday, 23 November 2026. No extensions are granted, including for technical problems, so we strongly advise final-year students not to leave it to the last week.
Why the intern year matters when studying medicine in Poland
Internship is the first stage of postgraduate medical training in Ireland. Completing it allows your Intern Network Programme Director to recommend you to the Medical Council for a Certificate of Experience, which you need to progress onto the General or Trainee Specialist Division of the register, and which most other countries also recognise. In short, if your plan is to return to Ireland as a doctor, the Irish intern year is the gateway.
The 2027–28 programme runs for 12 months, with a mandatory induction week from Monday 28 June 2027, a shadowing week from 5 July and formal rotations from Monday 12 July 2027. Interns complete at least three months each in medicine and surgery, and may rotate through specialties such as emergency medicine, general practice, paediatrics, psychiatry or anaesthesia. The intern salary currently stands at €47,127 on a basic 39-hour week.
Good news: Poland is on the list
Not every European degree qualifies. Graduates of most EEA countries are treated as already having completed the equivalent of internship and therefore cannot apply. Poland is one of only a handful of countries whose graduates are eligible, alongside Ireland, the UK, Norway, Denmark, Sweden, Italy (non-abilitante degrees only), Lithuania, Luxembourg, Malta, Portugal, Iceland and Slovenia.
The HSE guide is explicit that graduates of a Polish medical university may apply, including those who have sat the LEK exam in Poland, provided they have not completed a Polish postgraduate internship (staż). This is one of the strongest reasons why a medical school in Poland remains such a practical route for Irish and British students who want to study medicine abroad and build their career at home.
The catch: the timeline is tight, and not every university can meet it
This is where many students get caught out. To be eligible for the July 2027 intake, applicants must:
have graduated, with the full conferral date shown on their degree, on or before Thursday 10 June 2027 (and on or after 1 April 2025);
have their centile ranking, based on their overall degree award or overall exams, submitted directly to the HSE by the Dean of their medical school by 5pm on Friday 7 May 2027;
upload a Section C – Conferral Date and Centile Confirmation Date Form, signed and stamped by the Dean, with their application by 23 November 2026.
In Ireland, final exams and conferral are built around this calendar. In Poland, the academic year traditionally runs later: final examinations, the completion of the degree and the issue of diplomas often fall in late June, July or beyond. Unless a university actively adapts its final-year schedule and administrative processes, its graduates simply cannot meet the 7 May and 10 June deadlines, and face waiting a full year before they can start the intern year in Ireland.
How we led the way
This is a subject close to our hearts. Many years ago, our own Artur Banaszkiewicz, Founder of StudyMedicinePoland.com, was instrumental in working with Collegium Medicum in Bydgoszcz, the medical faculty of Nicolaus Copernicus University, to make it possible for its final-year students to apply for Irish internship and start it in the very same year they graduate.
That collaboration meant Irish and British graduates of Bydgoszcz no longer had to lose a year between graduation and internship.
Poznan University of Medical Sciences is another university that has been facilitating the HSE requirements for years. For a young doctor, that is twelve months of training, salary and career progression gained, and it has made Poznan and Bydgoszcz one of the most attractive choices for students planning a career in the Irish health service.
Not all Polish universities facilitate this
It is important to be clear: not every Polish medical university facilitates same-year entry to the Irish intern programme. Timetables, the way centiles are calculated, the readiness of the Dean's office to complete the Section C form and to submit rankings to the HSE, and the timing of degree conferral all vary from university to university, and can change from year to year.
That is why the choice of university at the very beginning of your journey matters so much. Two programmes that look identical on paper can lead to very different outcomes six years later. Before you accept an offer from any English-taught medicine in Poland programme, it is crucial to speak to the team at StudyMedicinePoland.com so we can explain the intricacies of the system and how each university handles the transition to Irish internship.
Your application checklist for the 2027 intake
If you are a final year medical student in Poland, or a 2025 or 2026 graduate, here is what you need for the application stage:
a completed online application on the HSE Career Hub, with Sections A to E filled in and the Section E declaration signed;
the photograph page of your passport (an expired passport is accepted);
the Section C form, completed, signed and stamped by your Dean;
evidence of English proficiency if required. Applicants who sat the Leaving Certificate or UK A-Levels can usually submit their results together with confirmation from their university that the degree was taught and examined solely in English, instead of IELTS or OET;
proof of right to work in Ireland, if you are a non-EEA national.
Later in the process you will also need a valid BLS, ILS or ACLS certificate, proof of vaccinations, Medical Council of Ireland registration (a separate process, opened to you by email in spring), Garda vetting and police clearance from Poland covering your entire period of residence and dated after you leave. Start the Polish clearance early: it is one of the most common sources of last-minute delays.

Choosing your posts and networks
Eligible applicants will be invited in early 2027 to rank up to 50 specific posts and all six intern training networks: Dublin/Mid-Leinster, Dublin/Northeast, Dublin/Southeast, West/Northwest, Mid-West and South. Matching takes into account your entry route, your employment permit status and your centile, and no changes are possible once preferences close. We always recommend using all 50 post choices and all six networks.
Ambitious students may also consider the Academic Intern Track, which offers 48 places nationally with protected time for research, medical education or leadership projects. Graduates of non-Irish medical schools may express an interest, though the application requires substantial preparation.
